A few words about Aegina island…
Aegina is one of the Saronic Gulf islands and its history begins centuries ago. In 1828, Aegina became the first capital of neo-Hellenic nation by Kapodistrias, the first governor of Greece. It is the first town-nation which adopted a currency as a new way of transacting by cutting its own silver coins with the famous sign of “chelone” (turtle) on it. It is in Aegina that the first mint of Greece was located.
Τhe temple of Aphaea, being one of the most important temples of Ancient Greece, is also located here, forming an isosceles triangle with the temples of Athens Acropolis and Sounio. The Aghios Nektarios Cathedral, the temple of Apollo in Kolona, the Chrisoleondissa monastery (14th century - the oldest monastery on the island), the Old Mediaeval Town, Paleochora with its churches are only some of the monuments you can visit.
Narrow streets and traditional neoclassical houses welcome every visitor. Here you can enjoy the sea whilst ridding in horse carriages, visit the unique fruit selling boats, the traditional fish market, museums and taste the famous Aegina Pistachios.
Perdika, with its picturesque harbour and its well-known fish taverns, is the favourite place for all yacht fans. Nearest beaches are Sarpa, Klidi, Klima, Aeginitissa, Marathonas. The small island of Moni, Angistri Island, Poros Island, Hydra Island and Methana Peninsula can easily be visited by yacht or by sea taxi from the harbour of Perdika.
